Classic Neapolitan cooking. Excellent service. Stick to the classics and you can't go wrong. The clam sauce is among the best I've ever had. Veal scallopini. Among the sides I love the broccoli rabe and the string beans. And the ice cream balls encased in chocolate are a fabulous desert. Have you dreamed of dining at Rao's but can't get a reservation? Come to Don Peppe. Cash only.
If you haven't had dinner at Don peeps my opinion is you haven't had good Italian food yet
Went to Don Peppe's in S Ozone Park for the first time last night. How did it take me so long. AMAZING place. Old school. No reservations, cash only, waiters with ties, menu on a blackboard. The food...OMG. I had 13 baked clams all by myself (wife doesn't eat seafood). Best I've ever had. Actually worth $33 and the dipping the bread in the sauce was heaven! Next was baked ziti (more like ziti with some cheese on top) but delicious. Then chicken Parm. Best I ever had. All this for $100. Half the food went home with us. I will be back!
You want old school Italian? This gem is your spot. We had a 5 hour layover in NY on the way to Paris so 6 of us headed there to eat after a recommendation from a friend! I'm so GLAD we did. You can tell nothings changed and the food is as good as it looks! Love the theme and I will be stopping next time I'm in the area - layover or not!
No reviewer can do Don Pepe justice. It's that good. Old style Italian. Cash only. Deliciousness only. Baked clams? We don't order them in any other restaurant (for almost 50 years now). Wine? Home made. I don't even like wine, but it's just plain perfect. Everything is served family style, but even the two of us leave no dish unfinished. It's. That. Good. Servers are friendly and professional. You don't know what you're missing.
Oh Don Peppe where do I start? Our flight back home had been cancelled and in the chaos we were lucky and were able to grab a hotel room nearby. Both my lady and I were tired and hungry after napping we realized that in our week long stay in nyc we hadn't had any Italian food. We had done West Indian food, bagels, pizza, hot dogs but no New York City Italian?! For shame our ancestors from the old country would have yelled at us in Sicilian! So realizing we were near Howards Beach and Ozone Park I started googling places. Looking on yelp I found that Don Peppe's was the number one ranked Italian restaurant in the area. So we said what the hell let's have a look. We got to Don Peppe's and immediately were treated by a man at the door dressed in street clothes who ushered us in. Did he work there? Was he just hanging out? Who knows. We grabbed a table and saw that in this old school joint with walls adorned with horse racing jockey shirts that menus didn't exist. We looked across the half full restaurant and saw that instead the entire menu was on a board next to the kitchen. Clam Linguini, Lobster, baked zitti and yes Veal Marsala to name just a few items on the menu. Our waiter came over. Unlike waiters you see at some trendy joint who might be wearing some ridiculous outfit with antler tattoos on their chest this was a older fedressed in a simple white button up and black slacks. In other words this waiter was a pro of the old school variety. We asked what was good and in a non chalet way told us about what the place was known for. I asked about the wine and he said it's chilled red or white. That it came in a small bottle. Which I imagine was home made but I wasn't entirely sure. After a back and forth with my lady we decided on shrimp marinara to start, then for our main course clam linguini with a side of broccoli rabe. "Good choice,"our waiter said, "it's a lot of food so it's more than enough." Words can't describe the food. The shrimp was done simply but. Oh so tenderly. While the broccoli rabe was done just right. But for me the highlight was the clam linguini. Unlike other places they already had taken the clam out of the shell. So there was no broken clam shells and you got more clams. Whole garlic clothes had been roasted in olive oil and had softened. If there had been the very idea of a cold inside my body it was destroyed by the beautiful strength of the garlic. The linguini with the wine left us both filled with joy. As we paid we learned that they'd be closed for the month. We were lucky. I looked over and saw some older regulars at a table playing cards. Having been around forever Don Peppe's felt less like a restaurant and more like a home. Generations had come here and would continue to come as long as Don Peppe's stayed open.
Family style Italian cuisine. Service was attentive. Had the complimentary bread, followed by baked clams, portobello mushrooms and the daily special appetizer: crab cakes. Had the linguine with white clam sauce as our pasta course. Followed by chicken parmigiana and veal marsala. Tartufo and cappuccino for dessert with some anisette. Also, copious amounts of house red (grape juice). Bill, with tip, came to $121 a person (party of four). Well worth it.
I always love the ambience of this place. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. My favorite dish is the chicken don peppe - it's breaded chicken cutlet with bruschetta on top .. my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The best part is not just chicken but steak doesn't even need a knife to cut it .. it will cut with your fork like butter every time! Although I don't eat them due to seafood allergies, my family always talks about how incredible the baked clams are & have to get them every time we go. The red sangria is my go-to drink there. Truly a staple of South Ozone Park!
Old school restaurant - yes they still exist! Delicious family style food. Bring your appetite. For appetizers, we decided eggplant rollatini, baked clams, and a simple salad. For the main course we decided on Veal parmigiana and Chicken Scarpariello . Our pasta choice was linguine with clam sauce and spaghetti with meat sauce. For vegetable, broccoli rabe . We chose the variety so that we could each indulge in all different dishes. I would have to say of everything that we tried. The baked clams and broccoli rabe were actually the best. The other food was flavorful and hardy. For desserts, we tried a pistachio Tartufo, Peach sorbet (actually served in a real frozen peach). We also had some nice decaffeinated cappuccinos. The service was spectacular and well worth trying this place to eat for a large group. Keep in mind it is cash only and street parking can be a little bit challenging so plan on arriving a little early.
